So, there is good news and bad news.
So, there is good news and bad news.
The good news, I was accepted into the Barden Bellas.
The bad news, I was accepted into the Barden
Bellas.
A part of me was hoping that
they would not want me to join there little singing group so that I could show
my dad that I tried to put myself out there.
Either way, I’m in now. I think
what was even weirder was the whole ‘initiation’ ceremony that I went through
last night with all of the other new Bellas.
Aubrey and Chloe are the only veteran Bellas, so they were running the
show.
I’m not sure what Aubrey has
against the Treblemakers (the all-male a cappella group at BU), but she is vicious when it comes to them. The
weirdest part of the entire ceremony – weirder than the hoods, candles, and
drinking the ‘blood’ of our former sisters – was the oath that Aubrey made us
take. The oath was, and I quote:
“I
[Beca] promise to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of a
Bella woman and I solemnly promise to never have sexual relations with a Treblemaker
or may my vocal cords be ripped out by wolves.”
Crazy, right? However, I will admit that the after party
for initiation night (where all of the a cappella groups get together to party) was pretty fun.
Chloe seemed to get her ‘jiggle juice’ and have a good time; she also
got really touchy about her feeling that we “are going to become great friends”
– it really gets me how she has all of these ‘prophecies’ about our future as
the Bellas. That guy Jesse also tried
hitting on me again, and as it turned out he became a Treblemaker. Even if I had not ‘swore’ to have “sexual
relations” with him, I’m not interested.
Having a boyfriend in college is so cliché; plus, what would happen once
I left to LA?

ReplyDeleteSince this is a modern interpretation of a quest, this scene seems so out of place to the protagonist. She cannot believe that their king (Aubrey) is making them take an oath of chastity against Treblemakers specifically. The quest expectation seen here would thus be oaths and vows, as part of their initiation; they are to swear loyalty to Aubrey’s rules. This is a huge part of chivalry, as discussed in class. For knights to live up to their chivalric code, they must first know what that code’s guidelines are, just as the Bellas are expected to. Just as a knight’s oath and word in The Story of the Grail was vital to the knights and king, so is it in Beca’s quest, even if she does not understand the severity at the time.
