Opportunity Knocking

October 18th, 2012

So things can apparently get weirder here at Barden.  Today while taking a shower in the dorms I was practically attacked by that a cappella girl Chloe.  I had been recently been working on a new mix with David Guetta’s  “Titanium”, and inevitably got it stuck in my head and was singing in the shower.  Low and behold Chloe was with a friend of hers in another one of the showers, and then found it necessary to interrupt my shower!

I was completely nude, and she would not leave me in peace (or cover her junk) until I sang for her. The nerve! Finally I relented because I could not just stand there naked.  So, we sang together, and I have to admit that she had a great voice.  We actually harmonized, and it was...weird. She was impressed with my voice, and really wants me to come to auditions so I can be a Barden Bella.  I mean, dad wanted me to "put myself out there!" and here is my shot.  Hopefully it’s not as ridiculous as this shower fiasco.  The more that I think about it, the more hope that I have that it will not be as lame as it’s chalked up to be.

  2. This scene is pivotal to the quest because it allows the protagonist to have her quest to “become involved” aligned with her real quest: to help the Bellas to victory. The quest expectation adapted here is destiny for the protagonist. One could say it was fate that she was showering in the same dorm restroom where Chloe of all people was also showering, and she is the thread that will drag Beca to auditions. The expectation is not completely met because it is somewhat of a coincidence, that the one a cappella girl she met must live somewhere near by, and just happen to have heard her sing. This is the first time in the film that music becomes a signifier for sisterhood. Up until this point, Beca has allowed herself to use music to isolate herself, here it is uniting her to someone else. A similarity between this scene and one in The Story of the Grail is Chloe’s character coming to light: she is like Gawain, the nephew of King Arthur, yet she is the second in command to Aubrey, or King Arthur.
